Description
The Black Marans, also known as the French Black Marans, is a “Chocolate Egger”. The Black Marans does not have copper on its neck feathers but like the Black Copper Marans, is another variety of the Marans Chicken which originated in France. The Black Marans chicken has beautiful plumage which in the right light may display a scarab green lustre.
Black Marans are known for producing dark brown eggs with rich egg yolks. It is said that Aleanor of Aquitaine brought Marans with her to England as part of her dowry. The character James Bond would only allow Marans eggs on his breakfast plate, so you know that these eggs are truly devine! Because of the Marans, we personally now know why “Three French Hens” were an awesome 12-days of Christmas gift!
RARE: Black Marans are less common and very hard to find, vs. the Black Copper Marans variety.
Black Marans are docile with a friendly temperament. Great birds for 4-H, families, new chicken owners, and small homesteads as they do produce a decent amount of eggs per year.
Developed in Marans, France in the early 1900s, but was close to extinction due to World War II. It was not until the 1990s that the breed was able to recover and has become quite popular to rare breed enthusiasts in the U.S.A., however most backyards only have the Black Copper Marans variety.
